Storyline:
Secret Service agent Mike Banning, played by Gerard Butler, undergoes training at a military facility in Virginia, owned by his former Army Ranger commanding officer, Wade Jennings, portrayed by Danny Huston. Jennings now heads a private military company, Salient Global. Banning is recommended for the position of Secret Service Director by President Allan Trumbull, played by Morgan Freeman, to replace the retiring Director David Gentry, played by Lance Reddick. However, Banning conceals his struggle with migraines, insomnia, and chronic back pain from injuries sustained during the Iraq War, for which he relies on painkillers.
During a private fishing trip at Queen’s Lake in Williamsburg, Virginia, President Trumbull’s protection detail is attacked by a swarm of armed drones, with Banning being the sole survivor. He saves the president, but both are incapacitated—Banning recovers while Trumbull falls into a coma. Evidence surfaces implicating Banning in the attack, including his hair and DNA found in a van used to transport the drones, leading to his arrest. During transport to a detention facility, Banning’s convoy is ambushed by Salient Global mercenaries, but he escapes, recognizing that Jennings has betrayed and framed him.
Banning contacts his wife, Leah, played by Piper Perabo, to inform her of his survival and determination to expose the truth. This call alerts FBI agent Helen Thompson, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, to Banning’s location, sparking a police chase. Banning evades capture and seeks refuge at his father’s cabin in White Hall, West Virginia.
Meanwhile, Vice President Martin Kirby, played by Tim Blake Nelson, now acting president, publicly accuses Banning of orchestrating the assassination attempt with Russian support. Banning and his father, Clay, played by Nick Nolte, prepare for an attack by Salient mercenaries, using explosives to eliminate the assailants and escape.
