Description: In 1916 Petrograd, Russia, during a grand ball celebrating the Romanov tricentennial, Dowager Empress Marie presents her youngest granddaughter, eight-year-old Grand Duchess Anastasia, with a music box and a necklace engraved with the words “Together in Paris” as parting gifts. The festivities are abruptly disrupted by Grigori Rasputin, a sorcerer and former royal advisor who was exiled for treason. Rasputin curses Tsar Nicholas and his family, vowing their downfall. Driven by his hatred for the Romanovs, Rasputin strikes a dark deal to enhance the power of his unholy relic, which he uses to ignite the Russian Revolution.
As revolutionaries attack the palace, Marie and Anastasia flee through a secret passageway, aided by a young servant boy named Dimitri. Rasputin confronts them outside on a frozen river but falls through the ice and drowns. Marie and Anastasia reach a moving train, but as Marie boards, Anastasia falls and hits her head on the platform, causing her to lose her memory.
A decade later, in 1926, Russia is under communist rule. Marie has publicly offered a reward of 10 million roubles for the safe return of her granddaughter. Dimitri, now a conman, teams up with his friend Vlad to find a young woman resembling Anastasia to claim the reward. Meanwhile, an 18-year-old Anastasia, now called Anya, leaves the orphanage where she grew up, determined to uncover her identity with the necklace as her only clue. Accompanied by a stray puppy named Pooka, she sets out for Paris, inspired by the inscription on her necklace. However, she is unable to leave the Soviet Union without an exit visa. An elderly woman advises her to seek out Dimitri at the abandoned palace. There, Dimitri and Vlad are struck by Anya’s resemblance to the missing princess and decide to take her to Paris, unaware of her true identity.
