Description: Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee, an oncologist, shares the story behind his book “Anand” during an award ceremony in Mumbai. The book is based on his diary entries chronicling his time with Anand, a patient he met under tragic circumstances. Bhaskar, who treats the poor free of charge, often feels disheartened by the suffering and poverty he witnesses daily, leading to a pessimistic outlook. Unlike his friend Dr. Kulkarni, who caters to the imagined illnesses of the wealthy to fund treatments for the poor, Bhaskar refuses to indulge the rich.
Kulkarni introduces Bhaskar to Anand, who suffers from lymphosarcoma of the intestine, a rare and incurable cancer. Despite being aware that he has only six months to live, Anand remains cheerful and spreads positivity, forming a deep bond with Bhaskar, whose personality starkly contrasts his own. Anand’s ability to connect with people draws him closer to Isa Bhai, a theater actor, and creates meaningful relationships.
As Anand’s health declines, he chooses to live his remaining days freely, helping others. He discovers Bhaskar’s feelings for Renu, a former patient, and encourages him to express his love, eventually uniting the couple. Anand wishes to be remembered for his lively spirit rather than his illness. It is revealed that he once loved a girl in Delhi, but his illness prevented their union.
