Description: In 1961 London, Jenny Mellor is a bright and ambitious 16-year-old schoolgirl with dreams of attending Oxford University. Her studies are tightly controlled by her strict and overbearing father, Jack. One rainy evening, while waiting at a bus stop after youth orchestra rehearsals, Jenny encounters David Goldman, a charming older man driving a Bristol 405. David, claiming to be a music enthusiast, expresses concern about her cello getting wet and convinces her to place it in his car while she walks beside him. As the rain intensifies, Jenny accepts his offer to sit inside the car, and the two engage in a conversation about music. Before dropping her off, Jenny shares her aspirations of experiencing a cultured and luxurious life at university, filled with visits to art galleries and French films.
A week later, David leaves flowers on Jenny’s doorstep, wishing her luck for her upcoming orchestra concert. When Jenny spots him outside a café where she is with her friends, she approaches him. David invites her to a concert and dinner with his friends, and she happily agrees. On the evening of the concert, Jenny’s father disapproves of her plans, but her more lenient mother, Marjorie, supports her.
When David arrives to pick Jenny up, he effortlessly charms her parents, convincing Jack to extend her curfew. At the concert, Jenny meets David’s friends, Danny and Helen, and the group later dines at an upscale restaurant. David and his friends invite Jenny to an art auction, where they bid on a painting by Edward Burne-Jones. Afterward, they visit Danny’s home, where they discuss Oxford and make plans to visit the university together the following weekend.
