Description: Ami Neta Hobo is a 2023 film that may leave viewers wanting more, especially those familiar with the original character portrayed by the late Chinmoy Roy in the 1978 comedy Charmurti. For newcomers to the series, the recent release might feel lacking in depth.
Kanchan Mullick takes on the role of Teni da, a charming yet exaggerated character from Narayan Gangopadhyay’s stories. Unfortunately, Kanchan’s performance misses the mark, failing to capture the unique essence of Teni da. His typical comedic style, which generally resonates well, doesn’t fit this role that demands a more nuanced humor.
The film strips away Teni da’s signature cleverness, quick-witted dialogue, and understated sarcasm. Instead, it leans towards a louder and more jarring comedic approach that challenges the viewer’s tolerance. While unconventional casting can sometimes provide a fresh perspective in adaptations, this particular choice undermines both the original material and Kanchan’s extensive experience.
Set against the backdrop of Jhau Bungalow Rahashya, the film follows Teni da and his friends, who are now in their mid-20s, as they journey to Darjeeling for a vacation. There, they meet Dr. Santra, a scientist who believes he has discovered a way to combat global warming. Intrigued by the scientist’s proposal, Kyabla—also a scientist—shows interest in assisting him at his supposedly haunted bungalow.
