The story begins in 1950, during Halloween, where 11-year-old Harvey Pekar refuses to dress as a superhero while trick-or-treating. The film then transitions to adult Harvey, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, navigating the rough streets of Cleveland. A documentary-style segment introduces the real Harvey Pekar.
In 1975, Harvey, with a raspy voice, visits a throat doctor and displays signs of hypochondria. His wife, disillusioned with their “plebeian” lifestyle, decides to leave him, leaving Harvey powerless to stop her. Months later, a despondent Harvey continues his job as a file clerk at a VA hospital. A colleague, Mr. Boats, offers him advice through an Elinor Wylie poem.
The real Harvey Pekar reflects on his past as a part-time used-record collector and salesman. The narrative then shifts to 1962, where Harvey meets the introverted greeting card artist Robert Crumb during a yard sale. Bonding over their mutual love for jazz and comic books, the two form a lasting friendship.
By 1975, Crumb has gained fame and returns to Cleveland. Feeling lonely and unfulfilled, Harvey yearns to make a significant impact on the world. A poignant moment in the VA hospital’s deceased files section inspires Harvey to attempt drawing his own stories, though his lack of artistic skill hinders him. Over a diner meeting, he pitches a new comic concept to Crumb, who agrees to illustrate Harvey’s scripts.
A series of classic moments from Harvey’s life culminate in the release of “American Splendor #1,” which he proudly shares with his VA co-workers. The story advances to 1984, where Harvey has published eight issues of American Splendor. Despite critical acclaim, the comics fail to bring him financial success, and he remains a humble file clerk.
