During the final stages of the American Civil War, Confederate guerillas, led by Frank James and his brother Jesse, narrowly escape an ambush by Union forces thanks to Jesse’s sharp-shooting skills. Upon learning of the Confederacy’s surrender, the group, including the Younger brothers, decides to return to their homes in Missouri. However, they find their town occupied by the Union Army, with farmers being forced to sell their land to the railroad or face violent consequences.
Jesse, reunited with his childhood friend Zee, discovers the ruthless tactics of railroad tycoon Thaddeus Rains and his enforcer, Allan Pinkerton. When Cole Younger kills two railroad men in a fit of anger, he is sentenced to hang. Jesse, Frank, Zee, and the Younger brothers stage a daring rescue, but Jesse is injured and hides at Zee’s home to recover.
Tragedy strikes when the railroad burns down the James family home, killing Jesse’s mother. Seeking vengeance, the group shifts their focus to disrupting the railroad’s operations by robbing banks and payrolls, becoming known as the James–Younger Gang. As they continue their crusade, they transform into folk heroes, challenging the oppressive forces of the railroad and the Union Army.
