Description: Set in 1940 during World War II, “Alone in Berlin” follows the story of Otto and Anna Quangel, a working-class couple living in Berlin. After learning of the death of their only son, they decide to resist Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. Their determination grows as they witness the suffering of an elderly Jewish woman in their building, who faces relentless persecution and ultimately takes her own life.
The couple begins a silent rebellion by writing and distributing anti-Nazi postcards, urging others to stand against Hitler. Their first message reads, “Mother, Hitler Killed My Son. He Will Kill Your Son Too.” Initially, Otto tries to act alone to protect Anna, but she insists on joining him, and their shared mission rekindles their emotional bond.
Meanwhile, Gestapo inspector Escherich is assigned to track down the source of the postcards. Though he is driven by professional pride rather than Nazi ideology, his investigation becomes increasingly challenging. Over three years, he develops a begrudging respect for the elusive “Hobgoblin,” as he calls the postcard writer. Under pressure from his SS superiors, Escherich resorts to drastic measures, including executing an innocent man, as his progress stalls.
The film portrays the Quangels’ quiet yet powerful defiance against tyranny, highlighting their courage and resilience in the face of unimaginable danger.
