Description: In 1942, during World War II, Wing Commander Max Vatan, a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot with intelligence responsibilities, is sent to Casablanca, Morocco, to assassinate a German ambassador. He teams up with Marianne Beauséjour, a French Resistance fighter who fled France after her group was compromised and killed. Disguised as a married couple, Max and Marianne grow close, despite acknowledging that emotions could be deadly in their line of work.
Marianne, who has gained the trust of the Germans, secures Max an invitation to a party where they plan to carry out the assassination. On the day of the mission, they share an intimate moment in a car during a desert sandstorm, aware they might not survive. The mission succeeds, and they escape. Max invites Marianne to join him in London as his wife. They marry, settle in Hampstead, and have a daughter, Anna, who is born during a bombing raid.
A year later, in 1944, Max receives shocking news from the Special Operations Executive: Marianne is suspected of being a German spy who assumed the identity of the real Marianne after her death in France. It is also revealed that the German ambassador they killed was a dissident Hitler wanted eliminated. To test the suspicion, Max is instructed to plant false intelligence at home. If the information appears in intercepted German transmissions, Max must execute Marianne himself; failure to do so would result in his execution for treason. Max is told to act normally and avoid conducting any personal investigation.
Determined to uncover the truth, Max visits Guy Sangster, a former colleague who knew Marianne. However, Sangster, blinded during the war, cannot confirm her identity. He mentions Paul Delamare, another resistance fighter, but Max’s search for answers continues.
