**Plot Summary:**
In 1973, 16-year-old John Paul Getty III, the grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, the world’s wealthiest private citizen at the time, is kidnapped in Rome by a criminal gang. The kidnappers demand a $17 million ransom. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Paul’s parents, Gail Harris and John Paul Getty Jr., divorced in 1971 due to Getty Jr.’s struggles with drug addiction. Gail had rejected alimony in exchange for full custody of their children, leaving her without the financial means to pay the ransom. She appeals to Getty Sr. for help, but he refuses, believing that paying would put other family members at risk of similar crimes. The media becomes fixated on the story, with many mistakenly assuming Gail is wealthy and blaming her for not resolving the situation.
Meanwhile, Getty Sr. enlists Fletcher Chace, a negotiator from Getty Oil and former CIA operative, to investigate and secure Paul’s release. Paul is held captive in a remote location in Italy. Initially, his kidnappers, particularly Cinquanta, treat him with relative tolerance due to his quiet and cooperative nature. However, as time passes without the ransom being paid, tensions rise. The kidnappers debate whether to move Paul to a new location as winter approaches and their hideout becomes inhospitable.
When one of the captors accidentally reveals his face to Paul, he contemplates killing the boy to avoid being identified. Another kidnapper intervenes and kills him instead. The disfigured body is later discovered in a river and mistakenly identified as Paul’s. Gail, however, examines the remains and confirms it is not her son.
With this new lead, Chace locates the hideout where Paul was held, but by the time authorities raid the site, Paul is no longer there.
