Description: Akaash Vani (2014) is a Hindi film that tells the story of Akaash Kapoor, a bold and fun-loving young man, and Vani Mehra, a conservative yet friendly girl. Both are admitted to the same college in Delhi, where they become close friends with a group of four. Over time, their friendship blossoms into a romantic relationship, which they keep hidden from Vani’s traditional parents. Their love story spans four years, filled with shared adventures and deep affection.
As their final year of college ends, Akaash decides to pursue further studies in the UK, while Vani returns to her hometown, Dehradun, for her sister’s wedding. She confides in her sister about her relationship with Akaash, but her sister warns her that their parents would never approve. During the wedding preparations, Vani discovers that her sister has eloped with a man their parents disapproved of, leaving the family heartbroken and shamed.
In the aftermath, Vani’s parents, fearing societal judgment, hastily arrange her marriage to Ravi Sinha, the son of an acquaintance. Overwhelmed by guilt and parental pressure, Vani reluctantly agrees. She emotionally breaks up with Akaash over the phone, pleading with him not to contact her. Akaash is devastated but gradually becomes bitter and detached.
After her marriage, Vani’s life takes a dark turn. Her husband, Ravi, is charming in public but controlling and emotionally abusive at home. He pressures her into intimacy despite her reluctance, restricts her freedom, and prevents her from pursuing further education or a career. Vani’s misery deepens as she is forced into the role of a submissive housewife.
During a visit to her parents, Vani reveals her unhappiness, but Ravi manipulates them into believing he is the perfect husband. They send Vani back to Ravi, suggesting they start a family to fill her time. Trapped in a toxic marriage, Vani struggles to find a way out of her oppressive circumstances.
