Roman Melnyk, a construction worker, is granted permission to leave work early to prepare for the arrival of his wife, Olena, and pregnant daughter, Nadiya, who are returning from New York City on flight AX 112. At the airport, Roman is informed that the plane carrying his family has been involved in an accident. Overwhelmed with grief, he blames the air traffic controller for the tragic loss of his loved ones.
Meanwhile, Jacob “Jake” Bonanos, an air traffic controller, leads a happy life with his wife, Christina, and their young son, Samuel. On the night of the crash, Jake is left to manage both his own duties and those of his colleague, who is on a break. Amidst technical issues with the communication lines, Jake witnesses the disappearance of flight AX 112 and another flight, DH 616, from the radar, indicating a catastrophic mid-air collision. Although investigators absolve Jake of responsibility, he internalizes the guilt, which begins to unravel his mental health and strain his family relationships.
The collision claims the lives of all 271 passengers and crew members. Roman visits the crash site, posing as a volunteer, and retrieves his daughter’s necklace along with the remains of his wife and daughter. At home, he isolates himself, refusing to engage with the outside world. Tessa Gorbett, a journalist, approaches him, expressing her desire to write a book about the incident. Before leaving, she slips articles she has written on previous plane disasters through his mail slot, showcasing her commitment to accuracy and objectivity.
