Description: The film *Adaptation*, released in 2002, follows the story of Charlie Kaufman, a screenwriter plagued by self-doubt, anxiety, and depression. Tasked with adapting Susan Orlean’s book *The Orchid Thief* into a screenplay, Charlie struggles to find a compelling narrative in the source material. His twin brother, Donald, who lacks Charlie’s insecurities, moves in with him and decides to pursue screenwriting as well. While Charlie rejects formulaic storytelling, Donald embraces it and quickly sells his clichéd psychological thriller script for a significant sum.
Faced with writer’s block and growing pressure, Charlie travels to New York to meet Orlean but is too hesitant to approach her. Instead, he attends a seminar by renowned screenwriting guru Robert McKee for guidance. Donald, more socially confident, steps in to interview Orlean but grows suspicious of her responses. The brothers follow Orlean to Florida, where they uncover her secret affair with John Laroche, the orchid thief featured in her book. They also discover that the Seminole tribe sought the rare ghost orchid to create a mind-altering drug. When Orlean and Laroche realize Charlie has witnessed their illicit activities, she decides he must be silenced to protect her secrets.
