Description: Adam’s Apples Moon, released in 2005, tells the story of Adam, a neo-Nazi gang leader who is paroled from prison and joins a rehabilitation program. He is accompanied by Khalid, a violent gas station robber, and Gunnar, a kleptomaniac rapist. The program is overseen by Ivan, a priest who firmly believes in the inherent goodness of people, despite the misconduct and aggression displayed by the participants.
As part of his rehabilitation, Ivan assigns Adam a goal: to bake an apple pie. To Adam’s annoyance, this involves caring for and harvesting an apple tree in the churchyard. The task proves challenging as crows and worms destroy most of the apples. Adam, a misanthropic figure, is irritated by Ivan’s unwavering optimism and forgiveness, leading him to attempt to break the priest’s spirit and faith.
Throughout the story, Adam learns about Ivan’s difficult life, including his abusive childhood, terminal brain cancer, and his role as a widowed father to a severely disabled child. A cynical doctor suggests that Ivan views life’s challenges as tests from the devil to cope with his harsh reality. Adam uses the Book of Job to argue that God, not the devil, is responsible for Ivan’s suffering, ultimately causing Ivan to renounce his faith.
While Adam initially takes pleasure in Ivan’s breakdown, he soon realizes the positive influence the priest had on the group. Without Ivan’s guidance, Khalid and Gunnar revert to their criminal behaviors. When Adam’s former gang members confront Khalid, Ivan intervenes, asking for peace in his final days. The film explores themes of faith, redemption, and the impact of human connection.
