Description: Set in the 1960s, “Across the Universe” follows Jude Feeney, a Liverpool shipyard worker, who travels to the United States to find his estranged father, a former G.I. from World War II. Before leaving, Jude promises his girlfriend Molly to stay in touch. In New Jersey, Lucy Carrigan worries about her boyfriend Daniel, who is about to be deployed to Vietnam. Meanwhile, in Dayton, Ohio, cheerleader Prudence struggles with her feelings for another female cheerleader and eventually leaves school in shame.
Jude reunites with his father, Wes, a janitor at Princeton University, but their connection remains strained. While on campus, Jude befriends Max, a carefree student who invites him home for Thanksgiving. There, Jude meets Max’s family, including his younger sister Lucy. After dropping out of college, Max and Jude move to a bohemian neighborhood in Greenwich Village, managed by a singer named Sadie. Jude pursues a career as a freelance artist, while Max becomes a cab driver. Tragedy strikes when Daniel is killed in Vietnam, and Lucy attends his funeral. Elsewhere, a young African-American boy dies during the 1967 Detroit riots, prompting his brother Jo-Jo, a guitarist, to move to New York, where he auditions for Sadie’s band. Prudence, who had hitchhiked to the city, also joins the group.
Lucy visits Max in New York before starting college and develops a romantic relationship with Jude. Initially unhappy about their connection, Max eventually supports them. Soon after, Max is drafted into the army and sent to Vietnam, leaving Jude and Lucy behind. Prudence struggles with her feelings for Sadie, especially when Sadie begins a relationship with Jo-Jo. As Lucy becomes more involved in the anti-war movement, Jude remains focused on their relationship. Meanwhile, Sadie is offered a solo tour opportunity, leading to a painful breakup with Jo-Jo.
