Description: “Aaraattu” is a 2022 Indian Malayalam-language action film directed by B. Unnikrishnan and written by Udaykrishna. The story is set in a Palakkad village where residents are recovering financially from the 2018 floods by becoming self-sufficient through farming. Four young individuals and an elderly man arrive during the flood, assist the villagers, and decide to stay. They take over most of the farming activities and establish an ashram for yoga and spiritual practices.
When the state government mandates that unused land be converted into farmland, the villagers, along with Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Anjali, urge the wealthiest villager, Edathala Mathai, to donate his 18-acre land. To avoid losing his land and to develop a township, Mathai leases it to Neyyattinkara Gopan, who claims to use it for fish farming. However, Gopan’s true intentions are later revealed, and the story follows his hidden agenda in Madalakottu.
In May 2020, director B. Unnikrishnan shared a photo of a pre-production meeting with Udaykrishna and the technical crew during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was later announced that Mohanlal would play the lead role as a villager. Filming began in mid-November 2020 after Mohanlal completed work on “Drishyam 2.”
