Description: Thirteen-year-old Meg Murry faces challenges adjusting to school, dealing with bullying and mild depression, four years after her father Alex, a renowned astrophysicist, mysteriously disappeared. Meg and her exceptionally gifted younger brother, Charles Wallace, are sent to the principal after Charles reprimands two gossiping teachers, and Meg confronts Veronica, her neighbor and longtime bully. At home, Meg and her mother Kate encounter an unusual visitor, Mrs. Whatsit, who reveals that the tesseract—a concept of space travel Alex was studying—is real.
Later, Meg and Charles meet their classmate Calvin O’Keefe, who joins them at the home of Mrs. Who, another peculiar friend of Charles who communicates solely through quotes. Calvin shares dinner with the Murrys, and Kate reflects on Alex’s dedication to his work despite public skepticism. In the backyard, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who are joined by Mrs. Which, and they unveil themselves as celestial travelers. Explaining that they aim to help locate Alex, who has journeyed across the universe, the three women guide Meg, Calvin, and Charles through a tesseract to the distant planet Uriel.
On Uriel, the planet’s sentient flowers confirm Alex’s presence there. Mrs. Whatsit transforms into a winged creature, carrying the children across the skies. Calvin nearly falls to his death after catching sight of a dark planet, Camazotz, which Mrs. Which identifies as the domain of a malevolent force called “the IT.” The group travels to the planet Orion to seek guidance from a seer known as Happy Medium. Mrs. Which explains that the IT spreads negativity throughout the universe, affecting Earth as well: the gossiping teachers resent the principal’s promotion; Veronica struggles with self-judgment about her weight; the Murrys’ kind neighbor is attacked by deeply insecure teenagers; and Calvin’s father is a perfectionist who abuses his family.
