**Plot Summary:**
Miyo Sasaki, a discontented middle school student living in Tokoname, Japan, struggles to connect with her stepmother. At school, she persistently tries to win the affection of her crush, Kento Hinode, despite his constant rejection. One day, Miyo obtains a magical Noh mask from a mysterious seller, which allows her to transform into a cat. As a cat named “Tarō,” she spends time with Hinode at his home, accompanying him while he practices Japanese pottery and listens to his concerns. Miyo wants to reveal her true identity to Hinode but fears that he will reject her and stop spending time with Tarō.
When Miyo overhears classmates speaking ill of Hinode, she impulsively jumps off the school building to defend him, injuring herself in the process. Touched by her act, Hinode shows kindness by taking her to the nurse’s office and sharing his lunch with her. Later, as Tarō, Miyo learns that Hinode’s family is closing their pottery shop due to financial difficulties. Inspired by his kindness and wanting to lift his spirits, Miyo writes a love letter to express her feelings. However, a classmate intercepts the letter, reads it aloud, and embarrasses both Miyo and Hinode. To save face, Hinode publicly declares that he hates Miyo.
As Tarō, Miyo spends another night with Hinode and begins to believe that life as a cat with him is preferable to life as a human without him. This decision causes her human face to fall off as a porcelain mask. The mask seller reappears, claiming her face and offering it to a cat who wishes to become human. While Miyo’s friends and family search for her, Hinode confides in Tarō, admitting that he doesn’t truly hate Miyo.
