Description: In Beaufort, North Carolina, Landon Carter, a popular and rebellious high school senior, and his friends engage in underage drinking on school premises. They trick a new student, Clay Gephardt, into a dangerous prank at a factory under the guise of an initiation into their group. Unfortunately, Clay suffers serious injuries, leading to police involvement. To avoid legal consequences, the school principal gives Landon a choice: expulsion or completing various service projects, including weekend tutoring, janitorial work, and participating in the school play. Opting for the latter, Landon becomes better acquainted with Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the local Baptist minister. Despite knowing her for most of his life, Landon never befriended her due to the high school social hierarchy.
Struggling with the play, Landon reluctantly seeks Jamie’s help. She agrees but jokingly warns him not to fall in love with her, which Landon dismisses. They begin practicing together after school, and a bond forms between them. However, Landon’s attempt to impress his friends by being rude to Jamie causes her to distance herself. On the night of the play, Jamie’s performance leaves everyone, including Landon, in awe. Overwhelmed, Landon kisses her before the curtain falls. After the incident, Jamie avoids Landon until his friends play a cruel prank on her, led by his resentful ex-girlfriend Belinda. Defending her, Landon reconciles with Jamie, and she begins to warm up to him again. When Landon asks her on a date, Jamie reveals she’s not allowed to date. Determined, Landon approaches her father for permission, which he reluctantly grants.
