Eight years prior, Detective Matthew “Matt” Scudder finds himself in a car with his partner, who urges him to seek help, claiming Scudder is unreliable as backup. Scudder then enters a bar, where he orders coffee with shots. Two armed men storm in and kill the bartender. Scudder shoots one, chases down and kills the second assailant, and also eliminates the getaway driver.
In 1999 New York, a drug addict named Peter Kristo approaches Scudder, now retired, asking for his assistance. Peter’s brother, Kenny, a drug trafficker, explains that his wife was kidnapped and the kidnappers demanded a ransom. After Kenny paid the ransom as instructed, he discovered her dismembered body in a car. Distraught, Kenny seeks Scudder’s help in finding her killers, and Scudder reluctantly agrees.
Scudder begins his investigation by researching similar murders at a public library. He uncovers details about victims Marie Gotteskind and Leila Andresen. Along the way, he meets TJ, a homeless but street-smart youth, who assists him in his research. Following a lead from an article, Scudder visits a cemetery and speaks with the groundskeeper, Jonas Loogan. Loogan is visibly disturbed, recalling how he found trash bags containing Leila’s body parts in the cemetery pond.
Scudder then interviews Leila’s fiancé, Reuben, who witnessed two men abduct her into a van driven by a third person. Across the street, Scudder spots Loogan exiting an apartment building. He investigates further and discovers a shed on the rooftop where Loogan has been living. Inside, he finds polaroid photos of Reuben and Leila in compromising situations. Loogan confronts Scudder, admitting his involvement in Leila’s kidnapping. He claims he wanted to help Leila escape Reuben, a drug dealer, but the other two men tortured and killed her instead. Loogan warns Scudder to fear the other two, describing them as inhuman. After revealing one name, “Ray,” Loogan jumps off the roof to his death.
