Description: In the fast-paced world of breaking news, a dramatic event unfolds: a schoolteacher in Mumbai’s Colaba area has taken 16 pre-nursery children hostage and threatens to kill them one by one unless her demands are met. Panic spreads not only among the parents and those close to the kidnapper but also across the public, glued to their screens, eagerly consuming sensational updates and making decisions based on social media algorithms. The question arises: who will survive, and who will perish? As viewers bombarded with this information in the opening scenes, we’re left wondering why the film, “A Thursday,” lacks urgency until the interval.
A thriller like this should maintain tension, but the Yami Gautam-led movie squanders much of its runtime before delivering its intended impact. Additionally, many elements feel implausible. For instance, how does the schoolteacher, Naina Jaiswal (Gautam), acquire a gun, and how is she skilled enough to use it? While it’s clear that her actions stem from deep-seated trauma, the revelation comes too late.
The story also delves into a TRP-obsessed newsroom, where an anchor casually labels a person with depression and anxiety as “mentally unstable,” using derogatory language without hesitation. On the investigative front, two determined officers, Inspector Khan (Atul Kulkarni) and ACP Alvarez (Neha Dhupia), work tirelessly to resolve the crisis. Amidst the chaos, Dimple Kapadia portrays a composed and empathetic Prime Minister striving to navigate the dire situation with wisdom, emphasizing that “emotions can be an asset.”
Overall, “A Thursday” struggles to sustain tension and credibility, leaving audiences questioning its execution despite its promising premise.
