Description: Stephanie Smothers, a widowed single mother, runs a vlog dedicated to crafting and parenting recipes. She befriends Emily Nelson, a public relations director at a fashion company, and the two bond over martinis, sharing personal secrets. Stephanie reveals a past relationship with her half-brother, Chris. Emily expresses frustration with her husband, Sean Townsend, an English professor, and their financial struggles.
Stephanie agrees to babysit Emily’s son while Sean is away in London. When Emily fails to return calls, Stephanie learns from Emily’s boss that she is supposedly in Miami. Sean, concerned, contacts the police. Stephanie takes matters into her own hands, creating missing person flyers using a hidden photo of Emily.
Detective Summerville discovers Emily lied about traveling to Miami, and her body is later found drowned in a lake. Stephanie and Sean grow closer, sharing their grief and beginning an affair. The investigation reveals Emily had severe liver damage, traces of heroin in her system, and a $4 million life insurance policy taken out by Sean.
Stephanie receives a cryptic message seemingly from Emily, referencing her past affair with Chris. She recalls her late husband’s suspicions of her infidelity and the possibility that he intentionally caused the car crash that killed him and Chris.
Digging deeper into Emily’s past, Stephanie meets Diana Hyland, an artist who painted a portrait of Emily. Diana reveals the painting is actually of Claudia, a con artist who vanished. This leads Stephanie to uncover Emily’s true identity as Hope McLanden, who has an identical twin, Faith. Their mother, Margaret, shares that the twins set their house on fire at 16, killing their father.
Meanwhile, Emily reappears, surprising Sean with her plan to claim the insurance money and flee the country.
