Set in 1963 Texas, the story follows convicts Robert “Butch” Haynes (Kevin Costner) and Terry Pugh (Keith Szarabajka) as they escape from Huntsville State Penitentiary. During their flight, Pugh enters a home where eight-year-old Phillip Perry (T. J. Lowther) lives with his Jehovah’s Witness mother and sisters. Butch intervenes to stop Pugh from assaulting the mother and takes Phillip as a hostage to aid their escape. Their journey takes a dark turn when Butch kills Pugh after he tries to harm the boy. Butch and Phillip then travel across Texas, evading the police.
On their trail is Texas Ranger Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood), accompanied by criminologist Sally Gerber (Laura Dern) and FBI sharpshooter Bobby Lee (Bradley Whitford). Red is determined to capture Butch and rescue Phillip before they cross the state border. Red also has a personal connection to Butch: years earlier, he arrested Butch for stealing a car. Believing juvenile prison was safer than Butch’s abusive home, Red pushed for a harsher sentence, which ultimately led Butch down a path of crime. Now, Red seeks to rectify his past mistake by bringing Butch in alive, hoping for redemption.
The film explores themes of morality, redemption, and the consequences of past decisions, set against the backdrop of a tense manhunt.
