Description: In 1988, Dottie Hinson attends the opening of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame. As she reunites with former teammates and friends, memories of 1943 come flooding back. During World War II, the threat of Major League Baseball’s shutdown prompts Chicago Cubs owner Walter Harvey to convince fellow owners to fund a women’s league. Ira Lowenstein is appointed to oversee the project.
Scout Ernie Capadino visits an Oregon industrial-league softball game and is impressed by Dottie, the talented catcher. While Dottie is content with her life, waiting for her husband Bob to return from the war, her younger sister Kit dreams of escaping and pursuing a bigger future. Capadino dismisses Kit’s skills but agrees to take her along if she convinces Dottie to join. Dottie reluctantly agrees for her sister’s sake.
The sisters travel to Harvey Field in Chicago for tryouts, where they meet a diverse group of women, including Mae “All the Way Mae” Mordabito, Doris Murphy, Evelyn Gardner, Shirley Baker, Ellen Sue Gotlander, Betty “Spaghetti” Horn, Marla Hooch, Helen Haley, and Alice “Skeeter” Gaspers. Together with others, they form the Rockford Peaches, one of four teams in the newly established league.
The Peaches are managed by Jimmy Dugan, a former Cubs star who has become a cynical alcoholic. Initially disinterested and harsh toward the players, Dugan eventually begins to take the team more seriously. The group faces challenges both on and off the field, including the pressure to attract attention to the league.
A pivotal moment occurs when Dottie makes a spectacular catch during a game, earning her a spot on the cover of Life magazine. This publicity helps draw crowds, but the league’s future remains uncertain as the owners remain skeptical.
