Upon learning that she has given birth to a child, Bayou returns to Georgia under the pretense of reviving his mother’s juke joint, with the ultimate goal of rescuing Leanne.
However, Willie Earl, jealous of his brother’s achievements, informs the sheriff of Bayou’s return. Just as Bayou reunites with Leanne and their child, a mob arrives to seek vengeance.
The story fast-forwards to 1987, where Bayou’s elderly mother, Hattie May, seeks justice for her son after four decades. She hands over a collection of Bayou’s letters to his son, who is unaware of his true lineage. Upon reading the letters, he uncovers the long-hidden truth about his parents and the sacrifices made to protect him, leaving him to grapple with his identity and the secrets of his past.
