Description: In the 22nd century, rising sea levels caused by global warming have destroyed coastal cities, reducing the world’s population. Humanoid robots, known as Mecha, have been developed, capable of complex thought but lacking emotions.
In Madison, New Jersey, David, a prototype Mecha child designed to experience love, is given to Henry Swinton and his wife Monica. Their son Martin is in suspended animation due to a rare illness. Monica initially feels uneasy around David but eventually warms to him and activates his imprinting protocol, causing him to develop a deep, childlike love for her. David longs for Monica to reciprocate his affection. He befriends Teddy, Martin’s robotic teddy bear. When Martin is unexpectedly cured and returns home, he becomes jealous of David and provokes him into unsettling actions, such as cutting Monica’s hair while she sleeps. At a pool party, one of Martin’s friends pokes David with a knife, triggering his self-protection mode. David grabs Martin, and both fall into the pool. Martin is rescued, but Henry convinces Monica to return David to his creators for destruction. On the way, Monica changes her mind and abandons David in the woods instead. With Teddy by his side, David recalls “The Adventures of Pinocchio” and sets out to find the Blue Fairy, hoping she can turn him into a real boy and win Monica’s love.
David and Teddy are captured by a Flesh Fair, where outdated Mecha are destroyed for entertainment. David narrowly escapes death after pleading for his life, as the crowd mistakes him for a human. He flees alongside Gigolo Joe, a Mecha male prostitute framed for murder who is also on the run.
