Description: “A Hidden Life” is a 2019 film that tells the story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian peasant farmer from the small village of St. Radegund. When World War II breaks out, Franz is called for basic training in the German army, leaving behind his wife, Fani, and their three daughters. After France surrenders and the war seems to be nearing its end, Franz returns home to continue farming and raising his family in the serene mountains of upper Austria.
As the war progresses, Franz and other men from the village are summoned to fight and are required to swear allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Despite immense pressure from the community, the mayor, and even the Bishop of Salzburg, Franz refuses to take the oath. His decision leads to ostracism and hostility toward his family, but he finds strength in his faith, prayers, and the unwavering support of his wife.
Franz is arrested and imprisoned, first in Enns and later in Berlin. During his incarceration, he and Fani exchange letters, offering each other comfort and courage. Fani faces increasing isolation and aggression in the village but eventually manages to visit her husband in Berlin.
After enduring months of harsh imprisonment, Franz stands trial, is found guilty, and is sentenced to death. Despite multiple opportunities to pledge loyalty to Hitler and promises of non-combatant roles, he remains steadfast in his refusal. Franz is executed by the Third Reich on August 9, 1943, leaving his wife and daughters to carry on without him. The film portrays his profound moral conviction and the sacrifices he and his family made in the face of tyranny.
