**Storyline:**
In Moscow, Viktor Chagarin, a corrupt Russian official, schemes to frame former billionaire Yuri Komarov in a rigged trial unless Komarov surrenders a secret file containing evidence against him. Meanwhile, Jack McClane, arrested after an assassination attempt, negotiates a reduced sentence by agreeing to testify against Komarov. His father, NYPD detective John McClane, unaware of his son’s troubled life, travels to Russia to help after learning of Jack’s predicament. As John arrives at the courthouse, a bomb explodes, orchestrated by Chagarin’s henchman Alik, allowing Jack to escape with Komarov. John confronts his son, but their argument is interrupted as Alik and his men chase them through Moscow’s streets in an MRAP. The trio manages to evade pursuit.
Taking refuge in a safe house, John discovers that Jack is a CIA agent on an undercover mission. Jack’s partner, Mike Collins, pressures Komarov for the file’s location to expose Chagarin. Komarov agrees, demanding safe passage out of Russia for himself and his daughter. Collins is later killed in a shootout, but the McClanes and Komarov escape to a hotel to retrieve the key to the safe deposit box containing the file. There, they meet Komarov’s daughter, Irina, but John becomes suspicious of her behavior. His suspicions prove valid when Alik and his men ambush them, capturing Komarov and tying up John and Jack.
