**Storyline:**
In August 1904, Sabina Spielrein arrives at Burghölzli, a leading psychiatric hospital in Zürich, struggling with hysteria. She begins treatment with Carl Jung, a young Swiss doctor, who employs innovative techniques like word association and dream interpretation. Jung discovers that her condition stems from childhood trauma, specifically humiliation and sexual arousal caused by her father’s actions.
Recognizing her intelligence, Jung and his colleague Eugen Bleuler involve Spielrein in their experiments. She assists in measuring subjects’ physical reactions during word association, contributing empirical data to support psychoanalysis. Spielrein soon realizes that much of this field is built on the doctors’ self-observations and personal experiences rather than just patient studies.
Jung and Sigmund Freud correspond extensively, sharing and analyzing each other’s dreams. Freud sees Jung as his successor, deepening their professional relationship. Meanwhile, Jung finds a connection with Spielrein, and their bond intensifies through transference. Despite his commitment to his wife, Emma, Jung’s resolve weakens after meeting Otto Gross, a rebellious psychoanalyst who challenges societal norms around monogamy.
Jung eventually begins an affair with Spielrein, exploring taboo dynamics. Their relationship grows complicated as he advises her on her dissertation and publishes her work alongside his own studies. Spielrein desires a child with Jung, but he declines. When she seeks Freud’s help to address their relationship, Jung is forced to confess the truth, though Spielrein chooses not to damage his reputation publicly.
