Description: In a dystopian future Britain, Alex DeLarge leads a gang called the “droogs,” consisting of Georgie, Dim, and Pete. One night, after consuming drug-infused “milk-plus,” they embark on a violent spree, clashing with a rival gang. Later, they trick their way into the home of writer Frank Alexander, where they brutally assault him, and Alex rapes his wife, all while singing “Singin’ in the Rain.” The next day, Alex’s probation officer, PR Deltoid, confronts him, aware of his criminal behavior and warning him to stop.
Tensions arise within the gang as the members grow tired of petty crimes and demand more significant and profitable heists. Alex, however, asserts his dominance by attacking them. During another crime, Alex breaks into the home of a wealthy woman, bludgeoning her with a statue while his gang waits outside. Hearing police sirens, Alex attempts to flee but is betrayed by Dim, who smashes a bottle in his face, leaving him to be arrested. In custody, Alex learns the woman has died, making him a murderer. He is sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Two years into his sentence, Alex volunteers for an experimental rehabilitation program called the Ludovico technique, developed by the Minister of the Interior. The treatment involves forcing Alex to watch violent and disturbing films while being injected with nausea-inducing drugs, all while his eyelids are propped open. The films are paired with music by Alex’s favorite composer, Ludwig van Beethoven. Over time, Alex becomes physically ill at the thought of violence or sex, and even Beethoven’s music triggers a negative reaction. He pleads for the treatment to end but is compelled to complete it.
The Minister showcases Alex’s “rehabilitation” to officials, demonstrating how he is now incapable of violence or desire. The prison chaplain criticizes the program, arguing that Alex has been stripped of his free will, but the Minister defends it as a solution to reduce crime and prison overcrowding.
