Description: “A Christmas Carol” (2009) tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly businessman in London during Christmas Eve in 1843. Scrooge refuses to join in the holiday festivities, turning down his nephew Fred’s invitation to a Christmas dinner and rejecting requests to donate to charity. When his employee, Bob Cratchit, asks for a day off to spend Christmas with his family, Scrooge reluctantly agrees. Later that night, Scrooge encounters the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him to change his selfish ways or face a grim fate. Marley informs Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits over three nights.
The first spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Past, takes Scrooge on a journey through his lonely childhood, his relationship with his sister Fan, and his time working under Fezziwig. Scrooge also relives the moment he lost his fiancée, Belle, due to his obsession with wealth. Overwhelmed, Scrooge extinguishes the spirit and returns home.
Next, the Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge the joys of the holiday. They visit Bob Cratchit’s home, where Scrooge learns about Bob’s son, Tiny Tim, who is seriously ill and may not survive. The spirit also takes Scrooge to Fred’s Christmas party, where Fred speaks kindly of him despite his coldness. As the spirit begins to age and dies near Big Ben, he warns Scrooge of the dangers of ignorance and want, which manifest as two neglected children who grow into troubled adults.
