On June 27, 1976, Wilfried Böse and Brigitte Kuhlmann, members of the Revolutionary Cells, an extreme leftist terrorist group, hijacked Air France Flight 139 during its stopover in Athens. The flight was en route from Tel Aviv to Paris. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Defense Minister Shimon Peres were promptly informed of the hijacking.
During a refueling stop in Benghazi, Böse released a female passenger who had feigned a miscarriage. The hijackers then redirected the plane to Entebbe, Uganda, arriving on June 28. There, they joined forces with members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, with whom they had planned the hijacking.
The following morning, the hostages were escorted to an old terminal, where Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, an ally of the hijackers, greeted them. Meanwhile, Rabin instructed Peres and General Motta Gur, the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), to devise a military operation to rescue the hostages. While Peres proposed an invasion of the airport, Rabin and Gur opposed the idea. Simultaneously, the terrorists began separating Israeli and non-Israeli hostages, a move that angered Böse, who compared the segregation to the atrocities of the Holocaust.
