Description: Katie organizes a surprise birthday party for her boyfriend, Jack, on the 4th of July. As she sets up the decorations, her meticulous nature becomes evident as she tries to keep everything on schedule. While her parents, Gayle and Gary, along with friends, continue preparing, Katie leaves to pick up the cake. On her way, she stops to get her brother Seth and his young daughter, Ella. Throughout the film, Katie experiences recurring hallucinations of drowning in a car flooding with water. Meanwhile, an audiobook narrates a story about a woman who fails to sail a boat and tragically drowns.
Upon arriving at Seth’s apartment, Katie notices piles of unopened mail, leading her to suspect that Seth has relapsed into heroin addiction. She drives around town trying to find a detox center, only to discover that his previous one no longer accepts his health insurance. After sending Seth to a downtown detox center in a taxi and returning to the party with a sleeping Ella, Katie receives a call informing her that Seth cannot be admitted. She finds him in a deteriorating state and continues searching for a detox center across Los Angeles, missing Jack’s arrival at the party.
Seth begs Katie to buy heroin for pain relief, and she reluctantly acquires it from a homeless area near Skid Row, packaged in six small balloons. Back in the car, Seth asks her to return and buy a needle from a man living under a tarp. Katie refuses, and they head to a nearby drug store instead. At the store, the pharmacist recognizes Seth as a heroin user and gives Katie the key to the bathroom, where she changes Ella’s diaper. Seth prepares his injection in a vacant stall as Katie pleads with him to use less. After injecting, he appears rejuvenated, and they leave. Before departing, Seth hands Katie the bathroom key, joking about her having to return it to the now-closed pharmacy.
