Genre: Comedy;Romance
Description: Henry Roth, a veterinarian at Sea Life Park on Oahu, lives a carefree life surrounded by his unique friends: Ula, a marijuana-smoking Islander; Alexa, his androgynous assistant; Willy, his pet African penguin; and Jocko, a walrus. One day, his boat breaks down, leading him to the Hukilau Café, where he encounters Lucy Whitmore, who creates architectural art with her waffles. Intrigued, Henry returns the next day to have breakfast with her. However, the following morning, Lucy has no memory of their meeting. Sue, the café owner, explains that Lucy suffers from anterograde amnesia due to a car accident the previous year, which occurred while she and her father Marlin were returning from picking a pineapple for his birthday. To protect Lucy from reliving the trauma, Marlin and her steroid-addicted brother Doug recreate Marlin’s birthday every day.
Despite Sue’s warning, Henry attempts to reconnect with Lucy, but his efforts initially backfire. Undeterred, he devises ways to meet her repeatedly, treating each encounter as a first date. Over time, he wins her over, and Marlin and Doug allow him to continue when they notice Lucy singing the Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” in her studio—a significant change in her routine since the accident.
However, the situation takes a turn when Lucy discovers the truth about her condition after seeing a police officer issue a ticket for her expired plates. While distressed by the deception, Lucy’s strongest reaction is to feeling betrayed by her loved ones rather than her memory loss. Henry realizes this and continues to support her, proving his commitment and love.
