Description: “The 47 Ronin,” a 2013 film set in late medieval Japan, follows the story of Kai, a half-Japanese, half-English outcast living in the Akō Domain, ruled by the kind Lord Asano Naganori. Asano took Kai in as a child, and despite the scorn from Asano’s samurai due to his mixed heritage, Kai falls in love with Asano’s daughter, Mika.
As the Shōgun plans a visit, Lord Kira, the Shōgun’s master of ceremonies, schemes to take control of Akō. With the help of Mizuki, a shapeshifting kitsune, Kira orchestrates attacks on Asano, leading to a series of tragic events. During a hunting trip, a kirin—a mythical creature—is sent to kill Asano. Kai steps in, slaying the beast with a sword he recovers, and spots Mizuki in her fox form. Later, at the Shōgun’s visit, Kai notices a concubine with the same unique eyes as Mizuki but is dismissed when he tries to warn Oishi, Asano’s advisor.
Kira arranges a duel for the Shōgun’s entertainment, pitting his best warrior, a golem, against one of Asano’s men. When Mizuki incapacitates Asano’s fighter, Kai secretly takes his place but is discovered and severely punished. That night, Mizuki uses magic to make Asano believe Kira is assaulting Mika, driving Asano to attack Kira. Asano is sentenced to death and forced to commit seppuku to preserve his honor. Kira is granted Akō and Mika, but Mika is given a year to mourn before marrying him. Oishi and his men are declared ronin and forbidden from seeking vengeance, and Kira imprisons Oishi to break his spirit.
