Description: In 1884 Arizona, Dan Evans, a struggling rancher and Civil War veteran, faces financial troubles as he owes money to the wealthy Glen Hollander. One night, Hollander’s men burn Evans’ barn and scatter his cattle, warning that his home is next if he fails to repay his debts. The next morning, while searching for his lost herd with his two sons, William and Mark, Evans encounters outlaw Ben Wade and his gang. The outlaws have used Evans’ cattle to block the road and ambush an armored stagecoach guarded by Pinkerton agents. As Wade’s gang loots the stagecoach, Wade spots Evans and his sons watching from the hills. Deeming them harmless, Wade takes their horses, promising to leave them tied up on the road to Bisbee. After the gang leaves, Evans rescues the sole surviving stagecoach guard, Byron McElroy, who has been severely injured by Wade.
Wade and his gang head to Bisbee to celebrate their success and divide the loot. Wade decides to stay behind to enjoy the company of a barmaid, while the rest of his gang departs. Evans arrives in Bisbee separately with McElroy and hands him over to lawman Doc Potter. Evans then attempts to negotiate with Hollander, but he is pushed to the ground and dismissed. Furious, Evans storms into the saloon, where he encounters Wade. Evans convinces Wade to compensate him for the trouble he has caused, delaying the outlaw long enough for railroad men to ambush and arrest him. The railroad’s representative, Grayson Butterfield, recruits McElroy, Potter, Tucker (one of Hollander’s men), and Evans to transport Wade to Contention.
