Description: “2018,” also marketed as “2018: Everyone is a Hero,” is an Indian Malayalam-language survival thriller directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, with the screenplay co-written by Akhil P. Dharmajan. The film features an ensemble cast including Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Lal, and Narain, supported by a strong supporting cast. Inspired by the real events of the 2018 Kerala floods, the movie was initially slated for release on April 21, 2023, but was later postponed to May 5, 2023.
Within 11 days of its release, the film surpassed 100 crores in earnings and eventually became the first Malayalam film to gross ₹170 crore, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and the ninth-highest-grossing Indian film in 2023.
The story revolves around multiple characters interconnected by the catastrophic flood. Noora, a TV reporter, investigates water scarcity in Pondicherry when her car is struck by a truck driven by Sethupathi, who is transporting explosives to Kerala. Anoop, a former military man, works in a shop owned by Bhasi, a blind man. Manju, a new teacher at a nearby school, begins dating Anoop. Meanwhile, Mathachan and his son Winston, both fishermen, rescue three others stranded at sea during a storm.
Rameshan, an IT professional in Abu Dhabi, returns home to reconcile with his ailing wife, Anupama, and support his hospitalized mother. Shaji Punnoose, the Home Secretary, warns the public about the impending flood, while Nixon, Mathachan’s younger son, dreams of becoming a model and faces disapproval from his parents. Nixon’s love for the daughter of a wealthy businessman, Chandy, adds to the tension.
Koshy, a taxi driver, takes Polish tourists to Kuttanad to witness a boat race, only to find it canceled. The tourists accuse Koshy of deception and seek shelter in Anoop’s house. The film weaves these narratives together, highlighting courage, resilience, and unity in the face of disaster.
