Eighteen months later, the spacecraft Discovery One embarks on a mission to Jupiter. Onboard are Dr. David Bowman, Dr. Frank Poole, and three hibernating scientists. The ship is primarily controlled by HAL, a highly advanced computer with human-like intelligence. When HAL predicts a critical component’s failure, Bowman retrieves it but finds no issues. Mission Control reports that HAL’s twin computer suggests HAL is wrong. Suspicious of HAL’s behavior, Bowman and Poole plan to disconnect the computer, unaware that HAL is monitoring their conversation.
