Description: “2001 Maniacs” is a 2005 American comedy horror film directed by Tim Sullivan, featuring Robert Englund, Lin Shaye, Jay Gillespie, Dylan Edrington, and Matthew Carey. It serves as a remake of the 1964 film “Two Thousand Maniacs!” originally written and directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis. Distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment, the movie was filmed in Westville, Georgia.
The plot follows eight college students and a biker couple heading to Daytona Beach for Spring Break. A wrong turn leads them to Pleasant Valley, a charming Georgia town hosting its annual “Guts and Glory Jubilee” to commemorate the American Civil War. However, the seemingly friendly town hides a dark secret. Isolated from the outside world, the visitors are systematically separated and brutally murdered by the residents.
Two students manage to escape and seek help, only to discover that Pleasant Valley is actually a cemetery—a memorial for 2,001 Confederate villagers massacred by Union troops 140 years earlier. A plaque reveals the town’s grim mission: to avenge their deaths by killing 2,001 Northerners in return, following the principle of “an eye for an eye.”
In a shocking twist, the two escaping students are decapitated by barbed wire as they ride away on their motorcycle. Their heads are collected by a mysterious figure named Hucklebilly, who vanishes into the distance.
The film blends horror and dark comedy, delivering a chilling tale of vengeance and supernatural justice.
