Description: The 1922 film, released in 2017, tells the story of Wilfred “Wilf” James, a farmer residing in Hemingford, Nebraska, with his wife, Arlette, and their 14-year-old son, Henry. Wilf is deeply opposed to Arlette’s desire to sell their farm and relocate to Omaha. Determined to prevent this, he manipulates Henry into helping him murder Arlette, using Henry’s girlfriend, Shannon—whose relationship Arlette disapproves of—as leverage. Henry reluctantly agrees, and together they carry out the crime. After luring Arlette into a false sense of security and getting her drunk, Wilf and Henry kill her by slitting her throat. They dispose of her body in a dry well, later dropping a cow into it to conceal the evidence.
Sheriff Jones becomes suspicious of Arlette’s sudden disappearance but finds no proof of wrongdoing, reluctantly accepting Wilf’s explanation that she left. Over time, Henry becomes tormented by guilt, growing distant and withdrawn. Meanwhile, Shannon discovers she is pregnant, prompting her parents to send her to a Catholic institution in Omaha. Henry steals his father’s car and flees with Shannon, attempting to escape the consequences of their actions.
As winter sets in, Wilf begins to lose his sanity, haunted by relentless rat infestations and his guilt. He takes out a mortgage to repair his home but never follows through, allowing the property to fall into complete disrepair. Eventually, a rat bites his hand, leading to a severe infection that requires amputation. The film explores themes of guilt, betrayal, and the devastating consequences of their actions.
