**Storyline:**
Mitch Nelson, a U.S. Army captain with Green Berets Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 595, is settling into a new home with his wife and daughter on September 11, 2001. He has recently been assigned to staff duty under Lieutenant Colonel Bowers. When news of the devastating terrorist attacks breaks, Nelson volunteers to lead ODA 595 into Afghanistan. Initially, Bowers refuses, but veteran soldier CW5 Hal Spencer, who was set to retire, convinces Bowers to give Nelson command of the unit. Spencer also volunteers to join the deployment.
After bidding farewell to their families, ODA 595 travels to Uzbekistan on October 7, 2001. They are briefed and evaluated by Colonel Mulholland, Commander of the 5th Special Forces Group, and are chosen to fight alongside Northern Alliance leader Abdul Rashid Dostum. On October 19, 2001, ODA 595 is covertly inserted into Afghanistan aboard an MH-47 Chinook helicopter flown by the 160th SOAR. They land 40 miles south of Mazar-i-Sharif, a Taliban stronghold, where they meet Dostum.
The team splits into two groups: six members, led by Nelson, accompany Dostum to the mountains, while the remaining six, under Spencer’s command, stay at a fortified camp nicknamed “The Alamo.” Dostum aims to capture Mazar-i-Sharif while battling Taliban leader Mullah Razzan, who enforces strict Sharia law and has brutally killed many, including Dostum’s family.
Initially skeptical of Nelson’s abilities, Dostum gradually gains respect for him. However, a tactical error by Dostum leads to several casualties, causing tensions between the two. Nelson accuses Dostum of recklessness, while Dostum argues that Nelson and the U.S. are unwilling to fully commit to the conflict’s potential costs. They eventually reconcile and, along with Spencer’s team, continue their mission.
With Dostum’s leadership, manpower, and American airpower, the coalition achieves significant victories, making substantial progress toward capturing Mazar-i-Sharif.
