**Storyline:**
Cameron James, a new student at Padua High School in the Seattle area, quickly falls for the popular sophomore Bianca Stratford. Geeky Michael Eckman warns Cameron that Bianca is shallow and conceited, and her overprotective father does not allow her or her older sister, the rebellious Kat, to date. Kat, a senior, has been accepted to Sarah Lawrence College in New York, but her father, Walter, wants her to stay close to home. Bianca dreams of dating the wealthy senior Joey Donner, but Walter, a cautious obstetrician worried about teenage pregnancy, refuses to let his daughters date until they graduate. Frustrated by Bianca’s persistence and Kat’s defiance, Walter declares that Bianca can only date when Kat does, knowing Kat’s antisocial nature makes this unlikely.
When Cameron asks Bianca out, she explains her father’s rule and suggests he find someone willing to date Kat so she can date Joey. Cameron approaches the “bad boy” Patrick Verona, but Patrick intimidates him. Michael convinces Joey to pay Patrick to take Kat out, claiming it will allow Joey to date Bianca. Patrick agrees, but Kat initially rejects his advances. With Michael and Cameron’s help, Patrick learns about Kat’s interests and begins to win her over. Eventually, Kat agrees to go to a party with Patrick, enabling Bianca to attend as well, much to Walter’s dismay.
At the party, Kat becomes upset upon seeing Bianca with Joey and starts drinking. Patrick takes care of her, and Kat opens up about her dreams of starting a band. However, when she tries to kiss him, Patrick pulls away, angering Kat. Meanwhile, Bianca ignores Cameron for Joey, leaving Cameron heartbroken. Later, Bianca realizes Joey is shallow and self-absorbed and asks Cameron for a ride home. Cameron confesses his feelings and frustration with how she’s treated him, and Bianca kisses him in response.
